Reality Star Defends Call for Support Amid Outrage Over Lavish Lifestyle

Former Big Brother Naija housemate Terseer Waya, popularly known as Kiddwaya, has addressed the wave of criticism trailing his recent public appeal for financial donations to support victims of the recent massacre in Benue State.

The attack, allegedly carried out by suspected herdsmen in the Yelewata community, claimed the lives of over 200 individuals in one of the deadliest incidents the state has witnessed in recent years. In response, Kiddwaya—who hails from Benue—launched a donation drive through his foundation, asking Nigerians to contribute towards relief efforts.

Backlash Over Call for Donations

However, the public reaction to Kiddwaya’s appeal was far from sympathetic. Many Nigerians on social media accused the reality star of being tone-deaf, citing his well-documented opulent lifestyle and questioning why he wasn't personally funding the initiative instead of soliciting public donations.

Critics pointed to his frequent social media posts featuring luxury vacations, designer fashion, and exotic meals, suggesting that someone of his wealth and public stature should be able to foot such humanitarian bills without seeking external contributions.

Amid the mounting backlash, Kiddwaya quietly deleted the original appeal from his X (formerly Twitter) account.

“I’m Glad This Is Getting Attention” — Kiddwaya Responds

Undeterred, Kiddwaya issued a statement addressing the controversy. He reframed the attention surrounding the donation drive as a positive outcome, emphasizing the importance of spotlighting the tragedy that occurred in Benue.

“I am happy with the attention that I am getting, because it shines the light on how important the Benue crisis is. So I thank you all,” he said.

He further clarified that all donated funds will be directed strictly toward humanitarian aid, including shelter, food, clothing, and medical support for the affected families.

“So, please email us if you are affected, and we will do our best to assist with your urgent needs,” he added.

A Polarizing Moment in Celebrity Philanthropy

The situation has ignited a broader discussion on social media about celebrity responsibility, perception versus intention, and authentic giving in times of crisis. While some have defended Kiddwaya's efforts as a sincere attempt to mobilize support, others remain skeptical, demanding greater transparency and personal commitment from high-profile individuals with the means to make a difference.

As Benue State continues to reel from the devastating loss, public scrutiny over how aid is mobilized—and by whom—remains intense. Whether Kiddwaya's foundation can bridge the trust gap and deliver meaningful relief may ultimately shape how his efforts are remembered.
