High Expectations and the Shadow of Success
Midebams readily acknowledges the dual nature of her family's fame. "Being the daughter of a famous actor has been amazing and a big blessing which comes with a lot of pressure because the expectations are high," she shared in a recent interview. It's a sentiment many children of successful parents can relate to – the constant feeling of needing to live up to an established standard. For Midebams, this means contending with "high standards" set by audiences and industry insiders who compare her to her accomplished father and even her mother, Atinuke Ogungbe, who is also a seasoned actress.
While her father's popularity has undoubtedly provided a significant boost to her career, Midebams is quick to emphasize that her journey isn't solely defined by her famous name. "My dad’s popularity has had a great influence over my career growth, but my hard work and diligence has brought me this far," she asserts, highlighting her commitment to honing her craft.
From Makeup Artist to Leading Lady: A Challenging Transition
Interestingly, Midebams didn't immediately step into acting. She began her industry journey behind the scenes as a makeup artist. This experience, while valuable, made her transition to acting a "tedious" one. "As a makeup artist who is transitioning into acting, it wasn’t a walk in the park," she explained. The shift required her to adapt to new roles, manage high expectations, and learn to navigate the diverse personalities prevalent in the industry. These "dynamics," she notes, have been crucial learning experiences.
Confronting Bullying in the Industry
Despite her family's prominent standing in Nollywood, Midebams has not been immune to the challenges faced by newcomers. She openly admitted to experiencing bullying from older theatrical practitioners. This revelation sheds light on a less-talked-about aspect of the industry. "In my own point of view, I think some of them don’t want you to grow," she stated, adding, "Some don’t want you to be like them even if you’re looking up to them, and see that as an inferiority complex." Her words hint at the competitive nature of the industry and the potential for established figures to feel threatened by rising talent, even those with familial ties.
Charting Her Own Course
Midebams' candidness offers a glimpse into the realities of being a second-generation artist in Nollywood. While she benefits from a rich artistic heritage, she's also acutely aware of the pressure to carve out her own identity and prove her worth beyond her surname. Her dedication to her craft and her willingness to speak out about the challenges she faces suggest a young actress determined to make her mark on her own terms.
