Beirut - Battles raged in Syria as
regime troops and rebel forces clashed on Thursday across the country, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, adding at
least seven people were killed, including a young boy.
Regime forces pounded central Houla, site of a recent massacre, for a second
consecutive day, along with heavy machinegun fire, said the Britain-based
watchdog. Amid the renewed violence, a boy was shot dead by a sniper in Taldu
in central Houla, the monitor said. "Frightened residents of the area
fled" for nearby towns, just five days after a massacre killed 108 people
in Houla, nearly half of them children. In Qusayr, in the central province of
Homs, two men were killed by troops firing heavy machineguns as they tried to
capture the rebel bastion, the Observatory said.
In Daraya, in Damascus province, a
woman was shot dead by regime forces, the Observatory said. In the northern
province of Aleppo, two soldiers were killed by a blast that also injured at
least five other members of the security forces, the monitor added, In Aleppo,
a man identified by the Observatory as "the brother of a Syrian MP"
was shot dead on Thursday, quoting anti-regime activists as saying "the
man's family is very loyal to the regime and has participated in the repression
of protests".
In eastern Deir Ezzor, "three more
bodies of civilians were found", the Observatory said, reporting on an
area visited by the UN observer mission in Syria, and where the bodies of 13
people who had been executed were found on Wednesday.
More than 13 000 people have been
killed in Syria since an anti-regime uprising broke out in March last year, and
President Bashar al-Assad launched a fierce crackdown on dissent.
