When Blackberry
came into Nigeria about four years ago, it was embraced by all those, who could
afford it and maintain the device as it was initially meant for the rich.
Different models of Blackberry later flooded the market with reduced prices and
the device became affordable, even for students and the average working class.
This brought about
another revolution in the telecommunication business in Nigeria as it brought
with it an opportunity for the users to really talk and chat more with their BB
friends and associates.
But this did not
however, come with its disadvantages as the Blackberry has also become a
veritable tool, which agents of darkness use to perpetrate evil and all kinds
of crimes against unsuspecting users and internet friends.
One of the latest
casualties of the tragedy of Blackberry is Cynthia Udoka Osokogu, a 24 year old
post graduate student of Nassarawa State University, and daughter of an army
general, Cynthia had met some male friends through Blackberry Group chat few
months ago, and to her, this was an opportunity to relate with others, with
whom she felt she had certain things in common. But, the BB group chat, has
unfortunately led to her untimely death.
Cynthia Osokogu,
the only daughter of Major General Frank Osokogu (retd) was strangled in a
hotel by two undergraduate students in an hotel in FESTAC, Lagos.
The vivacious and
beautiful lady had been chatting with the new “friends” on the Blackberry for
some months before the ugly incident. In the course of their conversations, they
developed a friendship and a level of trust. These young men were also
university students, they promised to host Cynthia when she came to Lagos.
She had gone
missing on July 22, 2012 and her photo had been circulating on the internet
with friends and family hoping to find her fine and safe. However, this was not
the case.
Cynthia ran a
boutique and had traveled to Lagos from Abuja to get new stock for her
business.
On getting to
Lagos, she was picked at the airport by the two young men whom she had never
met before but were her friends on the BB.
The young men,
Echezona Nwabufor and Ezekiel Nnechukwu Olisa, who are now being accused of
killing her, were both said to be undergraduates and were believed to have paid
for Cynthia's flight ticket.
The men took
Cynthia to a hotel in Festac Town, Lagos, where they tied her up, raped her,
robbed her of all possessions, strangulated her and abandoned the body.
Nwabufor is said
to be a-300 level Accounting student of the University of Lagos, while Eloka is
and Accounting student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University.
They immediately
deleted her from their profiles to avoid any traces leading to them.
The hotel
attendants found her body and, since her ID cards and mobile phone had been
stolen, they could not identify her or call friends and family. Her body was
deposited in a morgue in Lagos. All this time, her family and friends were
searching for the girl.
At some point, one
of the culprits accidentally answered Cynthia's phone and the call was traced
to Festac. Therefore, her missing person's police report was submitted to the
Area E Command in Festac. This enabled her family to find her body in the
morgue, and also led them to the hotel.
Using CCTV from
the hotel, the killers were identified. According to reports, these two young
men are university students who have now confessed that they killed Cynthia and
she is their 6th victim the gang
reportedly specializes in luring unsuspecting young women, robbing them of
their possessions before killing them.
Here are the confessional
statements of the alleged killers:
Nwabufor said:
“It was a mistake,
I never meant to kill her. I invited her from Abuja as my friend on July 21. I
was trying to dislodge her by tying her hands and I hit her in the process. I
tied her because I did not want her to know I was escaping from the hotel. We
had a mutual agreement for her to come over. I met her from BB (blackberry)
group chat.
She came to buy
some things for her boutique in Abuja. We had a disagreement.
I did not rape
her. It was the devil's handwork. I wanted to run because I knew I had
committed a serious offence against her. I thought she had money on her that I
can collect. So in the process, I tied her with cellotape to make her not to
shout. I was not the only person, it was I and my cousin, Odera that did
it. We tied her together and beat her
together. Yes, I invited her and in the process we felt like robbing her of all
she had. The condom the police saw on me is what I used personally. I used it
on her based on the sex toy with her. She came with a vibrator sex toy, so I
inserted the condom on the sex toy and later dropped it there. I did not make
love to her. If they test the condom forensically, it will prove that I did not
use it on her. I drugged her with RAFINOL through Ribena drink. I bought three
packets of Ribena and when she took it, she became weak. It was my cousin that
drugged the drink, he used a syringe and administered ten tablets of it inside
the drink. This is the first time someone died in the process. I have done this
say like, four times before now but none of the girls died. Whenever they take
the drink, I will sleep with them and they will just lose memory of all that
transpired. Usually, I use hotels in Festac. I have used Opera mini Hotel,
Benny, Chelsea and Concilia. I feel bad
because I did not bargain for this to
kill her in the first instance. It is just unfortunate and it was an accident,”
His 23year old
accomplice/cousin Ezekiel
Nnechuwu Olisa
Eloka said:
“I am also an
Accounting student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. The morning it
happened, my
brother called me to come to the hotel to help him bind the girl so that he
can dispossess her
of her belongings. My mission at the hotel was to come and help him bind the
girl. In the process of trying to bind the girl, she put up struggle and we
assaulted her and in the process, she passed out. I did not hit her with any
hard object and we didn't have any weapon with us. My brother only told me he
wanted to take her money. I have not done it before. He asked me to buy the
drink for him.”
