There is a genuine
bitterness behind the pose of staff of Lagos State Inland Revenue Service
(LIRS) as they are bitter about their boss, Tunde Fowler’s gluttony.
It all started
when Lagos State Government increased the salaries of workers in its employ
over a year ago, and Fowler failed to jack up that of the agency’s staff.
Initially, they thought it was a passing phase, but several months had come,
and gone, and their boss has not changed his position.
Inside source told
us that LIRS’ staff were patient with Fowler but for some reasons, it seemed
their boss was bent on discovering the limit of their patience.
This happened
recently when he wrote a memo to Gov. Babatunji Raji Fashola where he claimed
that the agency gave each audit staff in its employ N20, 000 (twenty thousand
naira) as allowance every month.
The content of the
memo was a huge surprise to the staff when later on details of it leaked out to
them. And very livid were the over 50 audit staff. Their grouse was that at no
time did the agency pay them such amount. What they get every month as
allowance was N10, 000 (Ten thousand naira) each.
Generally, the
staff’s interpretation of Fowler’s false claim was that he had been
shortchanging them for long, and this time around they decided to confront him,
which they did. It was said that his explanation that in the memo he didn’t say
he pays them N20, 000 monthly but he said N20, 000 every two months did not add
up as the staff were not convinced.
And also angry at
Fowler’s greed were the directors of Lagos Inland Revenue Service who are about
six. He was able to pacify them recently when he bought them brand new Toyota
Camry 2012 Model, which cost N8m each. However, he has not been able to pacify
Gov. Fashola who came into conflict with him over his wasteful spending on his
daughter’s wedding to Abiodun Kuku, son of Ogbeni Oja of Ijebu land, Chief Bayo
Kuku, which took place in both Dubai and Lagos, last year.
Come December,
2012, orijoreporters reliably gathered that Fowler who heads LIRS, which
currently remits N21billion every month to the state government from the
Internal Generated Revenue (IGR), the agency makes every month, was recently
mandated by the Lagos governor to raise the money to N25billion every month.
