GM will tell you that even in its dotage the Impala was the best-selling full-size sedan in America in 2011, beating competitors such as the Chrysler 300, Ford Taurus and Toyota Avalon. What GM will admit less freely is that many of those Impalas landed in rental car fleets and other bulk buyers -- and by doing so, created more competition for the Chevy Malibu than other automakers would stand for.
