The Speaker of the
Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa has said that there is
need for members of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) to come up with
measures that would checkmate the activities of those, who exploit the
social media perpetuate evil as members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA)
has a board that checkmates the bad eggs among them
Speaking to pressmen
during the opening ceremony of a 4-day workshop organised for members of the
Lagos State House of Assembly Correspondents Association (LAHACA) with the
theme "Dynamics Of Digital Tools For Journalism Practice" at Marble
Field Hotel, Oshodi, Lagos on Monday 2nd November, 2015, Obasa added it is
something that journalists must work against.
"We cannot help
without adequate legislation that can regulate social media, which I call
exploiter or blackmailers because they are rampart, but I think the Lagos State
House of Assembly can also come up with a legislation that will checkmate their
activities and I also put it to you LAHACA members to come up with something
that will be of help to us," he said.
Obasa told the LAHACA
members that they should be vigilant so that they could expose those, who want
to tarnish the image of the profession through greed.
He revealed that he
had been involved in the process of training the journalists in the Assembly
behind the scene before he became the Speaker of the House, and expressed his
gratitude to members of the association for their reportage of the activities
of the Assembly.
"My doors are
opened to you, we will continue to ask for more and we will improve on the
things that would enhance your work. The world is now a global village as the
whole thing is now computerised with ICT application.
"The journalism
profession has adopted itself to the growing world of ICT, and we are committed
to putting this kind of training programme in place," he said.
In his response, the
Chairman of LAHACA, Mr. Akinboye Akintola thanked the Speaker for promoting the
tradition laid down by former Speaker Adeyemi Ikuforiji, adding that members of
the association would continue to promote the activities of the Assembly
through their reports.
