World Consumer Rights Day was established on March 15, 1983 to promote the basic rights of consumers worldwide.
On this day of each year, the global consumer movement unites around the world geared towards promoting the basic rights of all consumers.
The Chairman, Brand Journalists’ Association of Nigeria (BJAN) Goddie Ofose, in his speech welcome everyone to this year’s consumer summit being put together by BJAN as part of activities marking the 2017 World Consumer Right Day.
“World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD) which was started in 1983 is an awareness day is observed on March 15 globally. The objective is to instigate action among citizens for the international consumer movement.”
“I believe everyone is a consumer.  This year’s World Consumer Rights Day gives a platform for Nigerians to ventilate their views on issues they face. It ensures that their rights are respected and protected over injustice in the market.
Like we say, consumer is king. If we all agree that consumers are king, then, we should find it necessary treating them as such.” he said.
As face of the consumers, brand journalists have been consistent in inviting stakeholders to deliberate on issues affecting the consumers annually.
Every year, a theme is chosen for this day, and this year’s global theme is ‘Building a digital world consumer can trust” But BJAN have drawn a topic from this theme which is “Consumers Right In A Digital Age”.
Previous themes have been very interesting. Last year, it was Antibiotics off the menu’, ‘Our money, our rights’ in 2010, ‘Consumers and water’ in 2004 and ‘Unethical Drug Promotion’ in 2007.
This year, BJAN have put together again stakeholders who are going to do justice to the theme, consumers in digital age.
We are in the age where Facebook, Instagram and other digital communication platforms have taken over our normal visual markets. Consumers now use the online platform to transact business.
Presently, over 40% of the world population is now online compared with just 1% in 1995. In 2015, online retail sales generated $1.55 trillion. Research has revealed that while the telephone took 75 years to reach 50m people, Facebook took only one year and Instagram took just 6 months.
No doubt, while technologies have brilliantly been helping people in every field, creating many new benefits including better communication, access to information and greater choice and convenience, we still need to ask ourselves, how safe are consumers?
There are other questions about how to establish access to the internet for the many consumers who are not connected, how to improve the quality of services, which online services and products consumers can trust and what happens to the data they share online.
Chairman BJAN, Goddie Ofose added that before the end of the summit we would all be glad to joining the campaign to build #BetterDigitalWorld.
