Funmi Adeyi: Profiling an African TV Icon Exploring the Diaspora

In this interview, Funmi Adeyi, a TV presenter, Events/Media Consultant and the founder of Lasting Love Couples Talk Show, tells her success story to African Style and Culture.

Can you please tell us about yourself?
My name is Funmi Adeyi, I am married to Dr. Yemi Adeyi, and I am blessed with four beautiful girls. I am an event coordinator and a media consultant.  I host and present a television talk show called lasting love with Funmi Adeyi. . In addition, I host 2 separate events every year, the first is called Lasting Love Valentine and Couples Awards, which is always in February and the second one is the African Regal Exhibition, which is usually in March.

How long have you started your programmes?
Lasting Love TV show was first aired in November 2012 while Lasting Love Couples awards started in February 2016.

Can you please tell us how often you hold some of your programmes?
The Lasting Love Valentine and Couples Awards come up every year in February, which is a valentine season. This is targeted towards empowerment of couples who have been through challenges in the past. It is a season to reward couples, who have stayed together during difficult times.
The African regal exhibition comes up in March and is targeted towards Africans who are business owners.

Would you like to tell us what makes your event unique from all other events?
Lasting Love with Funmi Adeyi's TV show stands out from all other events because it deals with reality. It is real people talking about  real issues. All we do is real and I mean nothing but real. What we do is to bring couples together to share their experience during difficult times. We deal with reality, so we make sure that our guests talk about their story and encourage couples who might be going through similar problems. Everything about lasting love show is real. We bring couples on air and they talk about how they met and how they have dealt with some difficult issues in the past.

What is the driving force for your vision?
I am very excited because the will of God for us is to be together until the end. My driving force is the desire to see every couple enjoy their marriage and stick together till death do them part.
The devil has gained ground in so many marriages and is trying to destroy many homes, so Lasting Love's forum is created to enlighten the younger generation so that they can know what it takes to enjoy and remain married. It prepares them ahead of the marriage and enables them to learn new things when they are in marriage.

What would you like us to know about lasting love show?
Lasting Love by the grace of God, we have gained strength and are on some TV channels. We record a season of 13 episodes each time and it runs for a quater.
We are currently on Afroglobal television in Toronto, Canada Planet  328 on DSTV Africa, ABN Houston Texas.

    Who are your target audience?
Our target audience is everyone, from the younger generation to the older generation. The lasting love show gives the younger people wisdom, knowledge and understanding.
They gain enlightenment and acquire resources needed to enjoy their marriage. For the people who are already in marriage, it provides opportunity to learn more on how to keep and maintain marriage.
For the older generation, it helps to rekindle their love and keep them together. One elderly woman called me and said Funmi, my husband and I tried out what we learnt during your show, it was nice. Lasting love is for everyone and it cut across all ages.

    What are your upcoming events?
We have the African Regal Exhibition coming up on the 10th of March 2018.
On the 7th of April, 2018 there will be lasting love international launching in Toronto, Canada.

What are your testimonies so far?
For the fact that I started in a friend's room, went to the studio and considered it accepted, is a huge success on its own. Our acceptance on the TV stations and becoming well known in the USA and Canada is a great success to us.
When it was first aired on DSTV, my inbox was bombarded with emails from all over Africa countries. They see it as a life transforming show. To me that is a huge success on its own. In addition, coming together of couples who have separated for years is a great testimony.

Would you accept the opportunity to speak at a conference or seminar?
Sure! I am empowered to enlighten and to train others.

Do you see yourself setting up a school in the future where people can learn more about marriage?
Yes, I have just concluded a course on counselling.

What you like to tell the people out there?
Before you go into marriage, make sure you seek the face of God and seek counsel because the bible says “do not lean on your own understanding” so acknowledge Him. Don't stop learning; you do not know it all. There is always something new to learn.
