Shoprite to Pick PET Bottles from Lagos Shoreline

Shoprite has announced that it is set to pick plastic bottles from the Lagos shoreline.
It noted in a statement on Thursday that Africa’s biggest clean-up, which it was organising, would   bring together over 6,000 people across the continent to clean their communities in more than 500 different events.

Shoprite extended invitation to members of the public to join leading experts, thought leaders, the Lagos State Ministry of Environment, Lagos State Waste Management Authority, Wecyclers, Pick That Trash, Visionscape, Chanja Datti, Ecobaarter, Diamond Shine Nigeria, Sustainable Africa Waste Initiative, Kids Beach Garden and a host of volunteers to be part of the clean-up exercise.

A team leader of Pick That Trash in Abuja, Seyifumi Adebote, was quoted in the statement as saying that due to increasing levels of waste in the environment, it became imperative for greater awareness of the importance of picking up and separating waste to encourage a recycling culture in Africa.

The Head, Business Development, Wecyclers, Omobolanle Olowu, stated, “We are joining the Shoprite team and other partners to clean up as many locations as possible so that people will realise that there’s value in waste and clean up their neighbourhoods.”

Shoprite invited members of the public to join one of the 45 clean-up events taking place across Nigeria from Saturday to Wednesday by registering via www.actforchange.africa.
“Outside of Nigeria, clean-ups are taking place in 10 other African countries, including South Africa, Namibia, Zambia and Madagascar,” the statement read in part.
