Uber fired Joe Sullivan, its previous head of security and deputy general counsel, in November after it admitted that hackers had obtained the names, email addresses and phone number of 57m passengers and drivers in October 2016. The company waited more than a year to tell users or regulators about the breach and instead paid a $100,000 settlement to the hackers to get them to destroy the stolen information.
Khosrowshahi hired Olsen, a former general counsel of the US National Security Agency (NSA), in November following a breach in 2016 that exposed the data of some 57 million users of the ride-sharing service.
Separately, Uber said on Wednesday it narrowed its quarterly losses from a year earlier, although the ride-hailing company is still a long way from proving it can be profitable as it gears up to go public in 2019.
Under the leadership of Dara Khosrowshahi, who became chief executive in September, Uber has juggled investing in new markets while retreating from others where it was losing millions of dollars. It is building up services like food delivery and freight hauling as it seeks new revenue, and possibly a path to profitability, outside its core business.
Mr Khosrowshahi has made a number of high-level hires as he sets Uber on a course for an initial public offering he has said he hopes to complete in the third quarter of next year while also dealing with a number of federal investigations, including probes over gender discrimination, price transparency, foreign bribery, intellectual property theft, efforts to evade regulators and employees’ handling of an Indian rape victim’s case.
