Nigeria Records 276 New Cases of COVID-19, Total Infections Now 8,344

The spread of novel Coronavirus Disease COVID-19 in Nigeria continues to rise as the latest statistics provided by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control shows that the country has 276 new confirmed cases.

The new cases confirmed by the health agency NCDC took the country’s total virus infections cases to 8,344 across 34 states and the federal capital territory (FCT).

NCDC also announced that 16 more persons died from the virus infections in the last 24 hours. Raising the total of fatalities to 249. And 74 more patients have been discharged after testing negative twice to coronavirus. So far, the total number of patients recovered and discharged now 2,385.

There was an increase in the number of infections [276] reported on Tuesday compared to the number [229] reported on Monday.

Lagos continues to be the most impacted state whiles Kano is marching towards the 1,000 mark. Two states in Nigeria have yet to record cases, Cross River and Kogi.

The agency in a tweet late Monday night said the 276 new cases were reported in 15 states. 

The new cases were reported as follows: Lagos reported 161 cases of coronavirus infections, Rivers had 36 cases, Edo reported 27 cases, Kaduna had 19 cases, Nasarawa reported 10 cases.

While Oyo confirmed six cases, Kano confirmed four cases, Delta and Ebonyi reported three cases each, Gombe reported two cases. Also Ogun, Ondo, Borno, Abia and Bauchi reported one case each.

Till date, 8344 cases have been confirmed, 2385 cases have been discharged and 249 deaths have been recorded in 34 states and the Federal Capital Territory. And 16 deaths were recorded in Nigeria.

The latest tally of 8,344 cases means that Nigeria is currently fourth most impacted on the continent.
It comes behind, South Africa, Egypt and Algeria. The country has consistently recorded 100 plus new cases for the last over one month

Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa has conducted about 46,803 tests since the first confirmed case relating to the COVID-19 pandemic was announced.

While new cases continue to increase, NCDC has cautioned older people and those with pre-existing medical conditions such as diabetes and cancer, to observe all the necessary precautionary measures as they are at a higher risk of complications from COVID-19.

It also advised Nigerians to ensure proper hand hygiene, physical distancing and wearing a mask, especially around vulnerable groups.
The numbers are expected to rise as the NCDC increases testing capacity.
