NCC Releases National Cyber Security Awareness October Month 2020

The Month of October is the National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) globally, aimed at raising awareness about cybersecurity, and to provide the public with general knowledge and tools required for online safety.

Consumers are empowered through awareness and sensitization campaigns, by providing information on both the positive and negative potentials available online, and measures required to safeguard themselves and their loved ones.

The internet has brought about many advantages such as the ability to connect to millions of people from around the globe easily sharing information. Just as the internet comes with advantages it also has its disadvantages that cannot be ignored. Some of the disadvantages are cybercrime. Data is one of the most important assets in today’s world. As a result, many cybercrimes occur due to data breach either for personal, financial, or political reasons. Therefore, the protection of data has become an imperative subject worldwide.

Cyber Crime is a criminal activity that either targets or uses a computer network or networked device.

Data Privacy is the right of a citizen to have control over how their personal identifiable information (PII) is collected and used.

Data Protection is the law or regulation that governs the storage and sharing of data. Data Protection ensures that data shared by customers is only used for its intended purpose.

Every time we are online, we leave a piece of ourselves; these pieces of information can be used in a malicious way, this is why data privacy is important. The need to provide privacy of data for users is the motivation behind the development of the Data Protection Acts.

Here are a few tips on how to protect your data:

    • Backup your data; this helps with retrieving back data when your device is stolen, lost, or compromised.
    • Encrypt confidential information.
    • Create strong passwords and make it a habit to change it often.
    • Install Antivirus and Anti malware protection, this places a security layer for devices.
    • Always have your device software up to date.
    • Turn off your Bluetooth when not in use, as it can be used by attackers for malicious activities.
    • Set up privacy settings on all devices and social media.
    • Regularly check and update permissions on applications on all devices.
    • Always keep your firewall settings on.
    • Do not save passwords on your browser.
    • Remember to always lock your devices when they are not in use.
    • Always connect to public Wi-Fi with caution.

Remember cybersecurity is a collective responsibility; always do your part.
