Some experts had hoped that Nigeria and much of the African
continent would be spared by the pandemic in its early stages but since the
second wave began in early December, the disease has been spreading ruthlessly,
setting new records after months of low numbers that led to a lax on guard to
safety and weak enforcement of health protocols.
On Monday, Nigeria recorded 1,244 new COVID-19 cases with the total infections
rising to 101,331. The Nigeria Centre
for Disease Control (NCDC) made this known via its official Twitter handle.
NCDC also announced the discharge of 461 patients from
isolation centers across the country with 3 new deaths reported.
In its latest update, the health agency revealed that the new cases were reported across 17 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Lagos state, the epicentre of the virus in country recorded
the highest number of confirmed cases with 774 new infection taking the total
number of cases in Lagos to 36,875.
In its breakdown, the health agency said that Lagos, FCT and
Plateau recorded the highest number of
COVID-19 infections with 774, 125 and 102 cases respectively.
Other states with new cases are: Anambra-47, Ondo-46, Rivers-27,
Edo-18, Kaduna-16, Ogun-16, Gombe-16, Bauchi-11, Kano-11, Nasarawa-10, Akwa Ibom-7,
Sokoto-7, Borno-5, Ekiti-4 and Zamfara-2.
Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has conducted about 1,033,858
tests since the first confirmed case relating to the COVID-19 pandemic was
announced.
According to the health agency, on the 11th of January 2021,
1,244 new confirmed cases and 3 deaths were recorded in Nigeria.
Till date, 101,331 cases have been confirmed, 80,491 cases have been discharged and 1,361 deaths have been recorded in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Our discharges today includes 144 community recoveries in Lagos State managed in line with guidelines.
