    COVID-19: Nigeria Records Additional 14 Deaths, 1,340 New Infections

    The latest COVID-19 figures in Nigeria show a clear upward trend in the number of new cases after witnessing a drop on February 3 when 1,138 new cases were reported.

    Nigeria has seen a spike in numbers in daily cases of coronavirus since January.

    On February 4, 2021, 1,340 new patients tested positive in Nigeria and 14 persons was confirmed to have died of COVID-19 complications while 1,792 people recovered and were discharged on Thursday. The Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) tweeted.

    Its added that the discharges today include 824 community recoveries in Lagos State, 448 in the FCT and 142 in Plateau State managed in line with guidelines.

    NCDC noted that the new COVID-19 infections were recorded in 21 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

    According to the breakdown of new cases, FCT topped the list with 320 infections, followed by Lagos with 275, Rivers with 117 and Oyo with 100 cases.

    Other states with new infections are Akwa Ibom-57, Ogun-51, Ebonyi-48, Benue-44, Adamawa-42, Imo-38, Kwara-35, Gombe-32, Kaduna-31, Edo-29, Osun-29, Kano-24, Ekiti-15, Katsina-14, Delta-13, Nasarawa-13, Jigawa-10 and Sokoto-3.

    Till date, 136,030 cases have been confirmed, 110,449 cases have been discharged and 1,632 deaths have been recorded in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

    The agency said a multi-sectoral national Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), activated at Level 3, was coordinating response activities nationwide.

    However, the government has made use of face masks mandatory in public places and banned large gatherings. However, many citizens still violate the guidelines with the authorities in Abuja, the Nigerian capital, forced to shut two major markets in the city after traders and shoppers failed to adhere to the COVID-19 protocols.

    Nigeria will receive 16 million doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines before the end of February, according to authorities.
