The tournament will return to Australia 32 years after the
popular 2000 Sydney Olympics. Melbourne was held in 1956.
“I know what it takes to make a game successful in
Australia,” Prime Minister Scott Morrison told voters of the International
Olympic Committee in an 11-minute live video link from his office.
When the award was later confirmed and voted 72-5, Morrison
raised his arms into the air and gave up his two thumbs.
The victory led to a fireworks display in Brisbane, which
was broadcast to IOC members at a five-star hotel in Tokyo.
Brisbane spent 11 years preparing for the Games, following
the host country of 2028, Los Angeles. Paris will be held in 2024.
The 2032 deal appeared to have taken place months before the
official decision at the IOC meeting held prior to the opening ceremony of the
Tokyo Olympics on Friday.
IOC gave Brisbane Exclusive negotiation rights in February.
The decision made Qatar, Hungary and German Olympic officials look blind to
their own deadlocked bidding plans.
The results were expected, but a high-level Australian
delegation went to Tokyo in the COVID-19 pandemic to present speeches, movies
and promises on stage.
Brisbane has called on Mayor Adrian Schrinner, Queensland
has called on Prime Minister Anastasia Parasek, and the Australian Federal
Government has called on Minister of Sport Richard Colbeck to voters in the
Olympics.
They were joined by John Coates, a longtime official of the
Australian Olympics. John Coates is the Vice President of the IOC, who shaped
the fasttrack selection process two years ago.
The first format designed to reduce the cost of a campaign
gives the IOC more control and eliminates the risk of voting purchases.
The project will host events throughout Queensland,
including the Gold Coast, which hosted the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Brisbane’s famous cricket stadium, known as the Gabber, has
been upgraded and has the potential to host sports at competitions. Cricket was
once played at the 1900 Paris Olympics.
Starting with Paris in 2024, the host countries for the next
three Summer Olympics are now secured in the wealthy and traditional Olympic
host countries, and the trio will not face a vote.
The IOC and its pragmatic chairman, Thomas Bach, have
abandoned the traditional bidding campaign template and hosted a vote to
blockade priority cities with minimal risk.
Paris and LA were competing for 2024 until Bach and Coates
supervised the unprecedented double award four years ago, including the rights
to 2028.
Future organizers will provide stability to the IOC stabbed
by the two previous Summer Olympic Contests contaminated by voting purchase
claims when multiple cities participated in the vote.
The 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics and the postponed 2020
Tokyo Olympics are still under investigation by French prosecutors. They
subsequently involved officials who lost their position in the IOC family as
active or honorary members.
Following the often problematic Tokyo Olympics and the 2022
Beijing Winter Olympics in February, a low-risk future will invite the IOC to
scrutinize China’s human rights records.
Major partners are also secured until 2032. The IOC’s
signature broadcast contracts with NBC and leading sponsors Coca-Cola, Visa and
Omega will be bound for the next 10 years.
