    Nigeria Records 8 Additional Deaths, 674 New COVID-19 Infections

    After months of low numbers, Nigeria’s coronavirus cases and number of death have been on the rise in the past weeks shortly after the discovery of the much dreaded Delta variant of the disease which is said to be highly transmissible.

    Sixteen states and the Federal Capital Territory in Nigeria on Thursday reported 674 new cases of COVID-19 and 8 deaths linked to the virus in the past 24 hours.

    According to Nigeria Centre for Disease Control NCDC figures, as of August 19, Nigeria has identified 185,267 COVID-19 infection cases and has reported 2,244 deaths related to the disease.

    The day also saw 185 discharges, pushing the total number of recoveries to 167,923.

    The new infections reported Thursday raised Nigeria’s active case count to 15,100, an increase of 481 cases in the past 24 hours.

    Lagos, the most affected states by the diseases in the country accounted for 355 new cases out of the 674 reported on Thursday.

    While Rivers, FCT, Ogun, Akwa Ibom and Oyo reported 87, 38, 33, 32 and 32 respectively.

    Twenty-two of the new cases was also found in Edo, Ekiti had 20, Kwara had 17 and Delta reported 12 cases.

    Bayelsa sees 8 cases, Gombe with 5, Kaduna and Osun had 4 cases each, Enugu and Nasarawa reported 2 cases each and Plateau with 1 case.

    Today's report includes 0 cases from Abia, Kano and Ondo States, NCDC noted.
