Avatar: The Way Of Water has officially become the highest-grossing film of 2022.
The James Cameron–directed sequel surpassed the former
champion, the monster hit Top Gun: Maverick, following the latest box office
totals from Wednesday, according to Deadline.
The mostly computer-generated film has already made more
than $1.5 billion globally total since its debut in theaters on December 16.
Top Gun: Maverick grossed $1.49 billion during its lengthy
theatrical run, which Avatar 2 is likely to mimic, and the Tom Cruise–starring
movie broke streaming records on Paramount+ after it debuted on the service on
December 22.
Wednesday's impressive update also signaled that Avatar: The
Way Of Water had become the tenth highest-grossing film of all time after
passing Furious 7.
The outlet added that the film will likely move up to the
number nine slot on Thursday as it passes the first Avengers film.
Avatar 2 is already the ninth highest-grossing film in
international markets alone, and it is now the top film of the pandemic era in
Europe after it surpassed Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Avatar: The Way Of Water has currently earned $454 million
domestically, and over $1 billion in international markets.
Although there were initially worries that the
science-fiction film was in for trouble after it opened under expectations, but
that seems to have been because many viewers were waiting to see it in premium
format theaters, many of which were sold out on opening weekend.
The movie has so far shown impressive staying power from
weekend to weekend, and some analysts have suggested the initial estimates were
overinflated.
James Cameron suggested prior to the film's opening that it
would need to earn over $2 billion to be profitable.
However, According to The Hollywood Reporter, Avatar 2 needs
to earn over $1.4 billion to break even, a milestone it has already surpassed.
The original Avatar has grossed $2.92 billion globally,
which got an extra boost from a theatrical rerelease preceding the launch of
the new sequel.
It currently stands as the highest-grossing film of all time
when not adjusted for inflation, and the new sequel may have a chance of
reaching a similar peak.
The new film sees Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and his
partner Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) taking their family to live with another tribe of
Na'vi who live on the shore and spend most of their time in the ocean, which
Cameron used underwater photography to help develop the stunning visuals.
Earlier this week, he told the French outlet 20 Minutes that
the next sequel, which has already been shot, will show a darker side of the
alien race.
'The fire will be represented by the "Ash People."
I want to show the Na'vi from another angle because, so far, I have only shown
their good sides,' Cameron explained.
'In the early films, there are very negative human examples
and very positive Na'vi examples. In Avatar 3, we will do the opposite,'
Cameron said.
'We will also explore new worlds, while continuing the story
of the main characters,' he said. 'I can say that the last parts will be the
best. The others were an introduction, a way to set the table before serving
the meal.'
Avatar 3 is expected to be released on December 20, 2024.
