Acting Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Caroline Adepoju, has said the Service would open more passport offices in the Lagos State to curb delays in passport processing and issuance.
Caroline Wuraola Adepoju FSI, the newly appointed acting
Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service has directed all
passport offices nationwide to end the unnecessary delay of issuance of
passports.
Wuraola was recently appointed as the acting Comptroller
General of Immigration.
A letter dated May 26, 2023, signed by the Secretary of the
board, Ja’afaru Ahmed, said the appointment would take effect from Tuesday, May
30, 2023.
This is contained in a press statement issued on Tuesday by
Tony Akuneme, the NIS Comptroller of Media and Publicity.
The statement added that the Immigration Service will
improve the way passport applicants are treated during the application process.
The statement reads: “The newly appointed Ag Comptroller
General of Immigration Service, Caroline Wuruola Adepoju FSI, has directed all
the passport offices nationwide to take necessary steps to ensure no Nigerian
is subjected to any unnecessary delays or substandard treatments in the course
of applying for passports.
“The new Ag CGIS read the riot act when she addressed top
management of the NIS minutes after taking over from Alhaji Isah Jere, the
immediate past CGIS.
“Mrs. Adepoju went on to say that she will focus majorly on
passport issues and staff welfare as those two aspects contributed mostly to
the complaints of Nigerians and NIS personnel.”
The new Immigration boss also announced that a stakeholders’
meeting will be convened in the coming days to X-ray the real issues in the
passport process and propose far-reaching solutions, including the opening of
more front offices in the Lagos area, where the majority of the complaints
originated.
The statement continued: “The Ag CGIS equally said she will
adopt a bottom-top approach in tackling officers’ welfare and will start by
meeting all cadres of staff to hear their genuine needs in a bid to hit the
ground running with a blueprint that will be based on an all-inclusive needs
assessment.
“She poured encomiums on the immediate past CGIS and asked
God to guide him in his future endeavours. It will be recalled that Mrs.
Adepoju had served in various locations during her career in the NIS, the high
point of which was her appointment as Deputy Comptroller General in charge of
Finance, a position she occupied before her present appointment.”
Earlier in May, the Senate mandated its committee on Interior
to urgently investigate the circumstances leading to the delay in the issuance
and renewal of passports.
It directed the committee to submit its report on the
investigation in two weeks.
