Speaking at the event, FAAN’s Managing Director, Kabir
Mohammed, said the Authority decided to build a world class Avia-Cargo Village
that would address the challenges mitigating against avia-cargo exports in
Nigeria. He said the Village will have facilities for cargo processing,
packaging, certification, laboratory services, data gathering for traceability
of products and produces.
“Establishing an Avia-Cargo Village was identified as one of
the quick wins in addressing the rejection of our avia-cargo exports, and thus,
increasing our exports and earnings. We are determined to ensure that we take
our rightful place as the number one in Avia-Cargo exports in Africa within the
next few years.
“This Aviation Cargo Village will be a one-stop-centre aimed
at addressing most challenges mitigating against massive avia-cargo exports in
our country. It will have facilities for cargo processing, packaging,
certification, laboratory services, data gathering for traceability of products
and produces etc.
You can be assured that in a short time, cargo planes will
be departing from our airports fully loaded with goods that meet destination
standards and acceptance. I want to thank the members of the Avia-Cargo
Committee under the leadership of Ambassador Ikechi Uko and I officially
designate the land measuring 27,357.137 square metres as FAAN Avia-Cargo
Village,” he said.
The chairman of the Avia-Cargo committee, Ikechi Uko, said
the project would be largely funded by experts who would be brought in to
invest in the project.
‘We told FAAN that there needed to be a new place where all
the pre-export activities would be done, so that when you go to the terminal,
it is just to do your handling and it enters the plane. Good enough, FAAN
bought the idea and that is why we are here. Part of what is going to come here
is a laboratory, packaging companies and all that you see people do outside
would be done here. We are going to involve the best players in the world to
come here, so that this becomes a template that you can use in other airports
in Nigeria.
“FAAN would not be the one to build even though they would
have some of their properties here. Now that we have started, we would open it
up to Nigerians who are experts in the business to come and invest. It is a
Nigerian project and it would improve our capacity to export. It would be a
one-stop shop for every cargo related activity,” he said.
