During a site visit to Segilola Resources Operating Limited (SROL), an indigenous gold mining company in Ilesha, Osun State, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, reiterated the federal government’s dedication to supporting mining companies that prioritize local content in their operations.
Dr. Alake in a statement made available to newsmen on Friday
in Abuja by Segun Tomori commended SROL for its substantial investment in local
talent, noting that over 95% of its staff are Nigerians.
He urged other mining operators to emulate the company’s
approach and adopt international best practices to advance the sector.
Highlighting the significance of the mining sector in
Nigeria’s economic development, Dr. Alake emphasized the importance of his
7-point agenda aimed at revitalizing the industry.
He particularly emphasized the need to enhance security
within mining environments, revealing the establishment of a mines marshal unit
across all states to address this concern.
Addressing the vital role of community engagement in mining
operations, Dr. Alake praised SROL for surpassing its community development
targets.
He urged mining companies nationwide to prioritize community
development initiatives to foster safer and more mutually beneficial operating
environments.
In response, Segun Lawson, the Managing Director and Chief
Executive Officer of Segilola Resources, emphasized the company’s commitment to
excellence as a world-class project led by Nigerians.
He appealed for continued support from the Federal
Government to expand operations and contribute further to the nation’s economy.
Officials from SROL presented the company’s achievements to
the Minister, highlighting its open-pit mining operations and significant
contributions to local procurement and employment.
Last year, SROL produced 84,609 ounces of gold, valued at
$194.4 million, while investing heavily in local procurement and community
development projects.
The company’s efforts have resulted in significant benefits
for host communities, including compensation payments, community projects, and
job opportunities.
They also emphasized their commitment to environmental
sustainability, with zero environmental incidents reported.
