The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), OAU chapter, has joined the nationwide protest against the withholding of salaries by the Federal Government.
Members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) branch, held a peaceful demonstration on Tuesday to express their concerns regarding the non-payment of their salaries for the past four months.
The branch Chairman, Dr. Taiwo Arobadi, stated during a
one-day protest held at the university campus in Ile-Ife that the union’s
negotiations with the Federal Government have reached an impasse.
On July 7th, the national union organization
issued a directive mandating all branches to conduct a one-day nationwide
protest to voice their concerns regarding outstanding salary payments and other
unresolved matters.
Arobadi expressed his belief that the incident could have
been prevented and avoided. He respectfully requests that the Minister of
Education take appropriate action to address the situation.
He also urged the Minister of Labor and Employment to take
proactive measures to avert any potential disruptions or conflicts within the
university system.
SSANU chairman expressed the necessity for action due to the
government’s failure to adhere to agreements reached with the Union. He urged
stakeholders to promptly intervene to prevent the situation from escalating
into industrial unrest.
He requested the prompt payment of the members’ four-month
withheld salary and the elimination of discrimination between academic and
non-teaching staff of universities, among other requests.
