In a recent development, Professor Joseph Ikechebelu, previously designated as the Acting Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has transitioned back to his prior position as Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration).

This change occurred following the appointment of Professor Carol Arinze-Umobi from the institution’s Faculty of Law as the Acting Vice Chancellor by the governing council of the university, led by Ambassador Greg Mbadiwe. Professor Ikechebelu’s tenure as Acting Vice Chancellor spanned approximately two months before this transition.

Consequently, he relinquished his responsibilities and transferred authority to Professor Umobi on Monday.

The transition of leadership at the institution has been successfully executed, with Professor Ikechebelu assuming the role of Vice Chancellor. His predecessor, Professor Charles Esimone, concluded his tenure in May of this year, amidst certain controversies.

In addition to this appointment, the position of Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) will be filled in the near future, as confirmed by Dr. Emma Ojukwu, the Special Adviser to the Vice Chancellor on Special Duties and Public Relations.

With Professor Umobi now in office, the process of selecting a permanent Vice Chancellor will commence promptly.

Ojukwu said: “The next meeting of the governing council will consider the process for the appointment of the substantive Vice Chancellor and after that meeting, those interested in the position will start applying.

“The joint Senate/ Council selection committee will shortlist the applications and interview the qualified candidates.

“It was made in such a way that anybody interested in becoming the VC would not be appointed Acting Vice Chancellor because the council wants to provide a level- playing field for all the contestants.

According to Ojukwu’s statement, Ikechebelu was not formally designated as the Acting Vice Chancellor. He was merely tasked with temporarily overseeing the university’s operations until the governing council appoints the Acting Vice Chancellor.
