A 5km natural gas pipeline network has been successfully launched in Victoria Island, connecting Eko Atlantic City, Lagos, through the collaborative efforts of Axxela Limited and NGML.
This notable accomplishment represents a significant
milestone in the ongoing 72.5km pipeline infrastructure project undertaken by
Axxela and NGML, which aims to extend from Victoria Island to the Lekki
metropolis.
The newly commissioned 5km pipeline network, stretching from
Outer Marina to Kuramo Beach, marks the initial phase of the project and is
anticipated to provide gas connectivity to customers from Five Cowrie River by
Army Officers’ Mess in Bonny Camp, extending all the way to the proposed Lekki
International Airport.
As the Chief Operating Officer of Axxela, Kehinde Alabi,
stated, “The commencement of the first phase of this substantial 72.5km
pipeline network emphasizes our dedication to expanding natural gas
infrastructure within the Greater Lagos Area. By establishing Eko Atlantic City
as the pioneering customer on this axis and connecting it to the initial gas
supply, we are facilitating increased access to the benefits of natural gas.
This endeavor provides dependable energy solutions capable of fostering
economic growth.
At Axxela, our mission extends beyond fueling businesses. We
are committed to fostering the growth of self-sustaining clusters and
contributing to the socio-economic development of Nigeria.”
In addition, Justin Ezeala, Managing Director of NNPC Gas
Marketing Limited (NGML), stated, “For the past two decades, NGML and Axxela
have been recognized for their pioneering efforts and significant contributions
to natural gas advocacy. This expansion project further solidifies our
partnership and commitment to developing natural gas infrastructure across
Nigeria and Africa. We are confident that extending the natural gas pipeline
network to the highly commercial Victoria Island and the rapidly developing
Lekki area is a positive step forward.”
David Frame, Managing Director of Eko Atlantic City,
emphasized the importance of being the first customer to connect to and benefit
from the project. “This development not only ensures a more efficient, stable,
affordable, and reliable energy supply for our power generation needs but also
establishes a commendable standard for contemporary urban living. Beyond the
substantial socioeconomic benefits, the sustainable nature of natural gas
aligns with our vision of creating a future-oriented city that prioritizes
energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.”
“The strategic partnership between Axxela, NGML, and Eko
Atlantic City aims to address the urban coastal city’s energy demands with
efficiency and reliability. Eko Atlantic City is currently undertaking the
development of a 60MW capacity gas-powered plant infrastructure, scheduled for
commissioning in the upcoming years. As this visionary city continues to expand,
its substantial power requirements become critical for both residential and
commercial operations. Axxela, recognized as a market leader in natural gas
processing, distribution, and power development, contributes its extensive
expertise in delivering piped gas to approximately 200 industrial and
commercial customers through a comprehensive natural gas infrastructure
network.”
Eko Atlantic City, also known as Nigeria’s International
Commercial Center, is an innovative coastal city situated in the heart of
Victoria Island. Its impressive infrastructural design encompasses world-class,
large-scale financial, residential, and commercial developments, transforming
the city into a prominent hub of economic opportunities. This novel urban
development embodies self-sufficiency and sustainability through cutting-edge
urban planning, power generation, advanced engineering, and technology.
Upon completion, the project will significantly enhance domestic gas utilization. Companies and businesses along the Victoria Island-Lekki corridor will gain access to a comprehensive pipeline network infrastructure, ensuring the ready availability of natural gas for diverse market segments. These include cooling systems, feedstock for industries, and decentralized power solutions, among others.
