Afrobeats star Divine Ikubor, widely known as Rema, is set to electrify the historic city of Benin with his inaugural homecoming concert this evening.

Scheduled to take place at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, this event is unique and signifies the dawn of a new chapter in Edo state's entertainment scene.

This concert comes after a previous attempt by Governor Godwin Obaseki to host Rema in December 2023, which was unfortunately canceled due to health issues. The "Calm Down" artist expressed his joy upon receiving a warm welcome upon his arrival in Edo just days before the concert.

Recently, Rema participated in a groundbreaking ceremony for the Edo Arena alongside Governor Obaseki, where he laid the first block.

The venue, named ‘Rema’s Dome,’ will be situated at the former Garrick Memorial School Ground on Ekehuan Road in Benin City.

They were accompanied by Dr. Asue Ighodalo, the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Uyi Oduwa Malaka, the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, Culture, and Diaspora Affairs, along with other prominent government officials.

The thrilled musician expressed gratitude to the people of Edo for their unwavering support, praising Governor Obaseki for his impactful reforms and initiatives that have enhanced the lives of residents and transformed the state over the past eight years.

"I am delighted to be here. I appreciate the prayers and support from the people of Edo. I take pride in the state, especially the progress made thus far. I admire the unity, passion, and determination to elevate it further."

Rema also commended the governor for the project, stating, "I am proud of the youth and eager to engage in any initiative that empowers and inspires them.

This is a significant opportunity, and I will ensure the successful completion of this project."

Regarding the rationale behind the project's development, Governor Obaseki stated, "Upon assuming office in 2016, we found ourselves without a dedicated venue for events, often resorting to renting canopies and spaces for significant gatherings, particularly when hosting guests from outside the State. It became evident that establishing a venue for large-scale events was essential.

"During our planning phase, we recognized that Edo possesses a distinctive advantage. The designation of Edo as the heartbeat of Nigeria is well-deserved. The state experiences substantial traffic, as many Nigerians traverse through Edo, presenting a significant economic opportunity for us.

We are well-equipped to host national events and draw people from across the country. We devised strategic plans to promote our culture and enhance our appeal to visitors."

Obaseki further elaborated that once completed, the arena will accommodate a diverse array of events, including concerts, national conferences, symposiums, and other large-scale gatherings.
