Volkswagen of America, Inc. (VWGoA) has announced the integration of generative AI into the myVW mobile app through a strategic collaboration with Google Cloud. This initiative allows Volkswagen to utilize Google Cloud’s advanced AI and machine learning technologies, along with insights from Google Cloud Consulting, to enhance the myVW Virtual Assistant, offering vehicle owners seamless access to essential vehicle information and services.

Currently, the generative AI-enabled Virtual Assistant is available to all My24 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport owners, enabling drivers to obtain vehicle-specific information and answers.

The myVW Virtual Assistant integrates Volkswagen’s connected car data with Gemini models on Google Cloud’s Vertex AI platform, ensuring users receive timely and precise information. Owners of Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport vehicles can utilize the myVW app to navigate their owners’ manuals and pose questions like, “How do I change a flat tire?” or “What does this digital cockpit indicator light signify?” Furthermore, users can leverage Gemini’s multi-modal features to gain insights on indicator lights by simply directing their smartphone cameras at their dashboards.

“We’re driven to introduce new technologies and features that enhance the ownership experience for all of our Volkswagen customers and create love for our vehicles,” said Abdallah Shanti, Chief Information Officer for Volkswagen Group of America. “AI is emerging as a utility tool for Volkswagen owners to better understand their vehicles and get answers to questions faster and easier. Thanks to our strong collaboration with Google Cloud, we’re able to bring valuable technology into our vehicles that help us successfully connect to the car and our customers.”

By integrating Google Cloud’s Vertex AI and BigQuery, Volkswagen can effectively train and refine Gemini models using a variety of data sources. These include vehicle owner’s manuals, customer FAQs, help center articles, official Volkswagen YouTube content, and detailed guides. Additionally, Volkswagen utilized the expertise of Google Cloud Consulting during the entire app development lifecycle, from initial design to final deployment. This extensive support guarantees that the app adheres to Volkswagen's stringent legal standards and quality expectations while providing a cutting-edge, user-focused experience.

"Volkswagen is setting a new standard for driver experiences by bringing the power of advanced generative AI directly to its customers," said Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud. "With the myVW Virtual Assistant built on our AI platform – and using the multi-modal capabilities of our Gemini models – all model year 2024 Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sports owners now have highly personalized vehicle support at their fingertips."

“The myVW mobile app helps us advance our promise of unparalleled customer service and exceptional value for our Volkswagen vehicle owners,” said Rachael Zaluzec, Senior Vice President, Customer Experience & Brand Marketing for Volkswagen Group of America. “The myVW app and Virtual Assistant effectively bring a collection of different points of information into one place, giving our owners the support they value from Volkswagen.”

Starting in 2025, owners of most MY20 and newer Volkswagen vehicles will have access to the new Volkswagen Virtual Assistant through the myVW app, which is available on both in the Apple Store as well as the Google Play Store.
