Coco Gauff, currently ranked sixth in the world, showcased her dominance against unseeded Czech player Karolina Muchova to secure the China Open title, marking the eighth WTA title of her career and her first since January.

The American, seeded fourth, faced challenges with her serve earlier in the tournament and had to come back from a set down in her three preceding matches leading to her first final since her victory in Auckland at the beginning of the year.

However, the 2023 US Open champion displayed remarkable resilience, winning decisively with a score of 6-1, 6-3 in just one hour and 17 minutes.

Gauff humorously attributed her resurgence to a visit to Beijing's Forbidden City alongside men's champion Carlos Alcaraz. "I guess the Imperial Palace brought us luck, so maybe I will pay a visit next year to get the same luck," she remarked to a delighted Chinese audience.

There was nothing fortuitous about the way the 20-year-old athlete swiftly took the first set in a mere 30 minutes, pressuring her opponent into numerous unforced errors and achieving two breaks of serve.

Karolina Muchova, ranked 49th in the world and previously as high as eighth before a lengthy recovery from a wrist injury sustained at the 2023 US Open, had triumphed over top seed Aryna Sabalenka and Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen in earlier rounds. However, she could not keep pace with Gauff's power and agility.

The 28-year-old had previously lost to Gauff in their last two encounters, including the final of last year's Cincinnati Open, and had suffered defeats in four of her last five WTA finals.

Muchova began the second set on a stronger note, taking a 2-0 lead as Gauff struggled with her serve, committing two double faults that allowed Muchova to secure an early break.

However, Gauff quickly responded by breaking back and then went on to win four consecutive games.

Ultimately, Muchova handed Gauff the victory by hitting a backhand long, marking her 24th unforced error, which contrasted sharply with Gauff's 24 winners and highlighted the match's dynamics.

In her post-match interview, Gauff expressed her admiration, stating, "I want to say congratulations to you, Karolina, it's great to see you back on tour. I think you're such an amazing player - you deserve everything and hopefully you play many more finals."

Gauff also acknowledged her new coach, Matt Daly, remarking that "obviously things are going well" after clinching her first tournament title under his mentorship.

She had parted ways with Brad Gilbert the previous month following her fourth-round exit at the US Open, where she was unable to defend her title.

With her victory at the WTA 1,000 event in Beijing, Gauff ascended to fourth place in the Race to the Finals, with the top seven players qualifying for the season-ending tournament in Riyadh in November.

She is now set to compete in the Wuhan Open, which begins on Monday.
