Nollywood actress Iniobong Edo has stated that marriage is not currently a focus for her, as it does not feature in her present aspirations or prayers. In an exclusive interview with PREMIUM TIMES in Lagos on Wednesday, she expressed her views on the matter.
The 42-year-old actress was previously married to Nigerian-American businessman Philip Ehiagwina, with whom she tied the knot on November 29, 2008, in the United States. Their marriage concluded in divorce in 2014.
In September, Ini generated excitement and speculation online when she posted what appeared to be a wedding announcement. Dressed in a traditional Efik bridal outfit, many followers assumed she was engaged and preparing for a wedding. Her caption, which spoke of love and encouraged her audience to maintain hope in their pursuit of happiness, further fueled the rumors.
However, what initially seemed like a significant personal milestone turned out to be a strategic promotion for her upcoming four-part series, ‘My Fairytale Wedding.’ The series narrates the story of a young woman who, with the aid of magic (Kayanmata), secures the most eligible bachelor in Lagos. Fans quickly realized that the post was related to the show rather than her personal life.
In a candid discussion with this publication, the actress addressed whether she envisions a traditional fairytale wedding in the future, stating, “I’m not particularly enthusiastic about marriage; my focus is on nurturing a strong relationship. I’m not wishing for it, nor is it part of my aspirations.”
She also shared her thoughts on the evolving dynamics within Nollywood, highlighting the increasing prominence of women in the industry. She recognized the significant impact of female filmmakers such as Bolanle Austen-Peters, Funke Akindele, and Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, noting that women are now at the forefront of the sector.
Having launched her film career in 2000, Ini remarked, “Women currently dominate the industry. They have claimed their rightful positions, and we enjoy equal rights, creating a level playing field for both genders. Women are determined; if they set their minds to something, they will achieve it.”
Reflecting on her past, Ini recalled in a June 2023 interview with Chude Jidenowo her regrets regarding her previous marriage, admitting that familial expectations significantly influenced her decision to wed Ehiagwina.
Although her marriage was brief, she remains open to the possibility of marrying again if she meets the right partner. The actress also elaborated on her decision to become a mother through surrogacy, a choice made after enduring several miscarriages. In 2021, she became a mother through surrogacy, utilizing her own eggs. For Ini, this was the ideal route to achieve her dream of motherhood, and she conveyed deep appreciation for the chance to nurture her child.
The actress, a prominent figure in Nollywood since her breakthrough performance in ‘World Apart’ in 2004, continues to excel both on screen and in her role as a mother.
Hailing from Akwa Ibom, she boasts a filmography of over 200 titles. Ini has received numerous accolades and established a fashion and cosmetics line, Secrets of April, in 2021. Additionally, she co-produced the Netflix series Shanty Town in 2023.
In addition to her acting career, Ini leads GEMS Africa, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering young women, and has held the position of special assistant on culture and tourism since 2016.
