Virgil van Dijk is currently engaged in discussions with the appropriate individuals at Liverpool regarding the extension of his contract.

Virgil van Dijk has indicated that he is engaged in “discussions with the appropriate parties” regarding his future at Liverpool, as the club captain approaches the concluding months of his contract.

The Dutch defender is among several prominent players at Anfield whose contracts are set to expire at the season's end, with questions also lingering about the futures of Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Currently, the three players will have the opportunity to negotiate pre-contract agreements with foreign clubs starting in January; however, Van Dijk has confirmed that he is in talks to potentially extend his tenure at Anfield.

“What the future brings I have no idea at the moment… discussions are ongoing with the right people and when it’s time to make a decision or whatever, I think you guys (the media) will know it as well,” he said.

“But now full commitment and focus is on Liverpool and to be successful this season. So we will see.”

Van Dijk, who became a member of Liverpool in 2018, celebrated his 33rd birthday in July. He continues to be a crucial component of a defense that has achieved five clean sheets in eight Premier League matches this season.

The recent 2-1 victory over Chelsea allowed Liverpool to reclaim the top position in the Premier League standings, following reigning champions Manchester City's 2-1 win against Wolves earlier that day.

With seven victories out of eight league games, new manager Arne Slot has made a remarkable entrance at Anfield.

Initially, City and Arsenal were considered the primary title contenders, but early indications suggest that Liverpool will also be a strong competitor for the championship.

“Everyone can have their opinion but I know, like I think a lot of people know, opinions can change every three days now in terms of (people saying) someone can win the league and someone can’t,” Van Dijk said.

“I think there is no point listening to any of that. I don’t do that.

“I focus on one game at a time, I want to be successful, I want to win trophies in every competition we’re in, I want to try and win it. We know how difficult it is but I am going to give it a very good go.”
