The Chinese foreign ministry announced on Friday that it has been in regular communication with the World Health Organization (WHO) regarding respiratory illnesses, in response to inquiries about the increasing instances of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China.

Guo Jiakun, a spokesperson for the foreign ministry, emphasized that the Chinese government prioritizes the health of both its citizens and foreign residents, noting that HMPV is not a novel virus and has been present in the human population for over 60 years.

According to the latest report from China's Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), HMPV cases remain elevated, consistent with trends observed in other regions of the northern hemisphere. Guo remarked, "HMPV infections are typically self-limiting."

He cautioned against alarmist narratives that mischaracterize common viruses as unfamiliar threats, stating that such claims contradict scientific understanding.

On Tuesday, the WHO confirmed that it has been in touch with Chinese health authorities and has not received any reports indicating unusual outbreak patterns.
