Gospel music icon, Mrs. Deborah Fasoyin, celebrated for her classic song "Odun lo sopin," has clarified that she is not the original composer of this enduring piece.

In an interview that was published online by FM 365 and covered by Church Times Nigeria on Thursday, Fasoyin explained that the song existed prior to her choir's well-known recording in 1979.

“I must confess to you, till tomorrow, we don’t know the composer of the song. We only added two verses to it,” Fasoyin stated.

“There were many CAC churches in Ibadan. In those days, whenever they had revival programmes towards the end of the year, you’d hear people sing the song Odun lo sopin (meaning ‘the year is coming to an end’). That chorus belongs to CAC. We only added two verses.”

During the interview, Ms. Fasoyin stated in Yoruba that the song had achieved widespread recognition prior to her choir's formal recording.

“We didn’t go to any mountain to pray to get the song. It was everywhere before we recorded it,” she clarified.

In a 2020 interview with Sunday Scoop, the vocalist who led the Good Women Choir of the Christ Apostolic Church in Ibadan discussed the translation of the song into various Nigerian languages, among other topics.

Meanwhile, online commentators supported Fasoyin’s narrative, with some recalling that "Odun lo sopin" had been performed as early as 1975.

Despite her consistent public acknowledgments over the years, many still attribute the song's composition to Fasoyin.

Her candidness, however, has garnered widespread admiration, with fans praising her openness.

"Odun lo sopin," popularized by Fasoyin and her choir, continues to be a mainstay at year-end celebrations, invoking prayers for divine protection, guidance, and provision as the year concludes.

Reports indicate that the song's lasting significance and spiritual impact have solidified its position in the hearts of many, establishing it as a beloved tradition that spans generations.
