Loris Karius, the former Liverpool keeper, has joined Schalke in Germany's second division as he looks to get his career back on track.

He’s been on quite the journey, playing for various teams in England, Germany, and Turkey, but hasn’t really found a solid spot to get regular playing time.

The 31-year-old faced a lot of backlash after a rough outing in the 2018 Champions League final against Real Madrid, which ended in a 3-1 defeat for Liverpool and marked his last game with the team.

Just days later, he was diagnosed with a concussion from a clash with Sergio Ramos.

Most recently, he was with Newcastle in the Premier League but has been without a club since his contract ended in July 2024.

“Schalke are a big club with passionate fans,” Karius said in a statement, adding “I’m looking forward to training with the team.”

Karius has signed with Schalke, a once-prominent club seeking to improve their current situation.

With a rich history that includes seven top-tier championships, Schalke currently finds themselves only six points clear of the relegation play-off zone in the second tier of German football.

After arriving in Gelsenkirchen for a medical examination on Friday, Karius is anticipated to serve as the secondary goalkeeper to Justin Heekeren.
