Japan's largest airline, ANA Holdings, announced on Tuesday its decision to acquire 77 new aircraft from Boeing, Airbus, and Embraer to enhance its fleet in response to increasing passenger demand both domestically and internationally.

The total value of the order is estimated at 2.1 trillion yen (around $14 billion) based on list prices prior to any discounts. The company confirmed that 68 of these orders are finalized, with an additional nine options for smaller and medium-sized aircraft. This significant order is made “in anticipation of future growth in passenger demand, including robust inbound demand,” the airline stated.

“This will be achieved by renewing the fleet that was suspended due to the Covid-19 and placing additional orders for new aircraft.” the announcement continued. From Boeing, ANA will acquire 18 widebody 787-9 aircraft, intended for “international routes in anticipation of strong demand between Asia and North America,” along with 12 737-8 jets.

Additionally, ANA will be adding 27 Airbus aircraft to its fleet, some of which will be utilized by Peach, a low-cost airline subsidiary of ANA. For domestic operations, the airline plans to order 20 Embraer E190-E2 aircraft, marking the Brazilian manufacturer's debut in Japan.

“This order will be the catalyst for improving the profitability of domestic flights and the expansion of international flights which is an area of future growth of our airline business,” stated Koji Shibata, president and CEO of ANA Holdings. “We intend to leverage this opportunity to establish ourselves as a leading airline in the industry with sustainable growth.”

With this substantial acquisition, the total number of aircraft in the Group’s fleet, including those already on order, is projected to reach approximately 320 by the financial year 2030.

More than half of the aircraft in the order will be from the Boeing 787 series, according to ANA.

Boeing expressed its gratitude for ANA's choice of the 787 Dreamliner and 737 MAX to enhance its fleet.

"This order is a testament to the market-leading capabilities of Boeing's wide-ranging family of airplanes. We look forward to working closely with ANA to finalize the agreement,"  stated the US aerospace company.

An Airbus representative commented: "We are delighted that ANA has opted to expand its fleet with a new order for 24 A321neo and three A321XLR aircraft. We anticipate finalizing the specifics soon."
