Liverpool manager Arne Slot has expressed regret over his actions that resulted in a red card during the tumultuous aftermath of the Merseyside derby earlier this week.

Following the intense 2-2 draw with Everton, where the equalizer came in the eighth minute of stoppage time, Slot was seen shaking hands with referee Michael Oliver in a manner that appeared aggressive, along with making remarks directed at the official amidst the post-match turmoil.

He was one of four individuals to receive red cards after the match, alongside his assistant, Sipke Hulshoff, and players Curtis Jones from Liverpool and Abdoulaye Doucoure from Everton, following a confrontation on the pitch.

Due to Premier League regulations concerning managers who are sent off, Slot was unable to speak to the media immediately after the game. He addressed the situation for the first time on Friday, stating, “Many things happened in extra time that led to my heightened emotions.”

“The emotions got the better of me and if I look back, I would love to do it differently,” Slot said. “I’m hoping to do it differently next time.”

However, he refrained from discussing the specific reasons behind his red card.

“What has exactly been said and what has happened, there’s an ongoing process and I don’t want to disturb that,” Slot said.

“I should have acted differently after the game,” he added, “but it’s an emotional sport and sometimes individuals, out of emotion, make the wrong decision and that’s what I did.”

Slot made these comments ahead of Liverpool's upcoming home game against Wolverhampton on Sunday, noting that forward Cody Gakpo is a doubt due to an injury that led to his substitution in the second half against Everton.

Liverpool currently holds a seven-point lead over Arsenal in the league standings.
