Nigeria is set to streamline the approval process for short stay visas through automation.
Nigeria is poised to revamp its short-stay visa approval process by implementing an automated system designed to minimize delays and reduce bureaucratic hurdles. Interior Minister Olubunmi Ojo revealed this initiative on Tuesday, highlighting that the new approach will accelerate visa processing and improve travel efficiency.
As part of this initiative, travelers will be able to apply for short-stay visas online, with approvals expected within 24 to 48 hours. Approved visas will be delivered directly to applicants via email, removing the necessity for a physical sticker at entry points. This change aims to alleviate long wait times and decrease the involvement of intermediaries who often facilitate visa approvals through unofficial means.
This initiative is part of a wider set of reforms introduced since President Bola Tinubu assumed office in May 2023, which also includes efforts to modernize the passport issuance process. Recently, the government launched a contactless passport application system for Nigerians living abroad.
Today, I presided over a meeting on Nigeria's new visa policy, the Nigeria Visa Policy 2025 (NVP 2025), alongside the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kemi Nanna Nandap.
