With this transition, TASUED becomes the first federally owned tertiary institution in the Ogun East senatorial district. The university’s well-developed infrastructure and robust academic programs mean that the federal government will need to make minimal investments to facilitate the change.
Presidential Approval and Strategic Significance
Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga announced that President Bola Tinubu approved the adoption on Friday. The President expressed gratitude to the Ogun State Government for inviting the Federal Government to take over the institution, which is widely regarded as one of the state’s premier educational assets.
President Tinubu highlighted the symbolic importance of the adoption, stating, “It is an opportunity for the Federal Government to honor Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who initiated the revolutionary free education program in Western Nigeria, and Dr. Tai Solarin, who dedicated his life to educating our children and instilling patriotic and leadership values at Mayflower School in Ikenne.”
He also acknowledged the role of the Awujale of Ijebuland, who played a pivotal role in preventing the university’s closure in 2012, just seven years after its establishment. Both Awolowo and Solarin are celebrated figures from the Ogun East senatorial district, which encompasses Ijebu and Remo.
Strengthening Teacher Education
President Tinubu emphasized that TASUED’s transition into a Federal University of Education aligns with the Federal Government’s commitment to enhancing teacher education and improving the quality of instruction across all levels of the educational system.
Expansion of Federal Universities of Education
With the adoption of TASUED, the Federal Government now oversees seven specialized universities of education. The others include:
- Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri
- Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo
- Federal University of Education, Kano
- Federal University of Education, Zaria
- Federal University of Education, Pankshin, Plateau State
- Federal University of Education, Kontagora, Niger State
This strategic move underscores the government’s dedication to advancing educational excellence and addressing the critical need for well-trained educators in Nigeria.
