In a statement issued by Mrs. Obiageli Orah, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs & Consumer Protection, the closure was approved by the Federal Government to facilitate the airport’s transformation from a domestic to an international facility.
Safety First
Orah explained that the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has closed the runway and the airport in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) regulations.
“As part of the Oyo State government’s initiative to upgrade Ibadan Airport from a domestic to an international airport, various improvements and remodeling works are currently underway. In compliance with aviation safety recommended standards and processes, the closure became imperative to ensure the safety of passengers as well as airport personnel,” she said.
Appeal for Understanding
FAAN appealed to airport users and stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation during the temporary closure. The authority reiterated its commitment to safety and seamless travel, stating, “FAAN—safe skies, secure airports, seamless travel.”
The upgrade of Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport marks a significant step in enhancing Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure, with the temporary closure aimed at ensuring the safety and efficiency of future operations.
