Chinese AI startup Zhipu AI has introduced a free AI agent, AutoGLM Rumination, joining the intensifying competition in China’s artificial intelligence market. The announcement was made on Monday by CEO Zhang Peng at a launch event in Beijing.

A Powerful AI Agent for Research and Automation

AutoGLM Rumination is designed to handle a variety of complex tasks, including:

  • Deep research and analysis
  • Web searches for information gathering
  • Travel planning with itinerary recommendations
  • Report writing for professional and academic use

The AI agent runs on Zhipu’s proprietary models, particularly GLM-Z1-Air, a reasoning model, and GLM-4-Air-0414, its foundation model. Zhipu AI claims GLM-Z1-Air matches the performance of DeepSeek’s R1 model while operating up to eight times faster and requiring just one-thirtieth of the computing power.

Rising Competition in China's AI Industry

Zhipu’s launch comes at a time when Chinese AI firms are accelerating their efforts to develop cost-effective AI solutions. Earlier this year, DeepSeek disrupted the industry with a model that operates at a significantly lower cost than U.S. competitors. Meanwhile, rival Manus recently introduced what it calls the world’s first general AI agent, though it charges up to $199 per month.

In contrast, Zhipu’s AutoGLM Rumination is completely free, available through its GLM model website and mobile app.

Zhipu AI: A Rising Force in China’s AI Sector

Founded in 2019 as a spinoff from a Tsinghua University research lab, Zhipu AI has quickly risen to prominence in China’s AI landscape. The company’s GLM4 model reportedly surpasses OpenAI’s GPT-4 on several benchmarks.

Zhipu has also gained attention for securing three consecutive rounds of government-backed funding in a single month. Most notably, the city of Chengdu invested 300 million yuan ($41.5 million) into the company, reinforcing its position as a major player in China's AI ambitions.

With the unveiling of AutoGLM Rumination, Zhipu AI is setting the stage for a new era of AI accessibility in China, offering cutting-edge capabilities at no cost to users.
