In alignment with its sustainability goals and in celebration of the 2025 World Water Day, International Breweries Plc (IBPLC)—a member of the AB InBev Group—has reaffirmed its commitment to water stewardship through a combination of innovative conservation practices and impactful community initiatives.

As part of its corporate social responsibility efforts, IBPLC has donated solar-powered boreholes to underserved communities across Nigeria, including those in Anambra, Rivers, Ogun, and Osun States. These installations are helping to provide clean, accessible, and reliable water to thousands, significantly enhancing public health and quality of life.

Leading by Example in Sustainable Brewing

Speaking on the company’s approach to sustainability, Carlos Coutino, Managing Director of IBPLC, described water as both a key ingredient in brewing and a fundamental human right. “At International Breweries, we recognize water as a vital resource and take deliberate actions to conserve it,” he said. “Our aim is not only to meet but exceed regulatory standards while reducing our environmental footprint.”

Coutino highlighted the integration of industry-leading water conservation practices within the company’s operations—ranging from modern brewing techniques to advanced water recycling systems—all designed to reduce waste and improve efficiency.

World Water Day 2025: A Showcase of Responsibility

To mark World Water Day, Logbara community in Ogun State received a new solar-powered borehole from the brewer, reinforcing IBPLC’s tradition of supporting host communities through sustainable infrastructure.

In addition to this, the company opened its doors to stakeholders across its four breweries for guided tours showcasing its water conservation infrastructure. The initiative offered first-hand insight into IBPLC’s environmental initiatives and allowed for constructive engagement with government officials and regulators.

During a visit to the Gateway Brewery in Ogun State, Abayomi Hunpe, Special Adviser to the Governor on the Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA), praised the company’s efforts. “IBPLC is setting a high standard in corporate responsibility. I encourage other companies to take a cue from their sustainable practices,” he said.

Similar sentiments were echoed in Port Harcourt, where Joan Tenny-Igoma of the Rivers State Ministry of Environment commended the company’s innovation. “The water recovery system here is impressive. It demonstrates a commitment to responsible resource management and sustainable production.”

Educating from Within

Recognising the importance of internal engagement, IBPLC also hosted an internal town hall session focused on sustainability. The initiative empowered employees to become informed advocates for water conservation, aligning staff at all levels with the company’s sustainability agenda.

Building for the Future

With sustainability at its core, IBPLC continues to integrate environmental responsibility into its long-term strategy. Through technology investments, community partnerships, and employee engagement, the company is actively contributing to a more water-secure and environmentally sustainable future.

“As a proud member of AB InBev, our global vision is to bring people together for a future with more cheers,” Coutino added. “We achieve this by building great brands with the finest natural ingredients, and by acting as stewards of the environment in every community we serve.”

By translating vision into action, IBPLC remains a shining example of how businesses can lead positive change—balancing profitability with purpose, and innovation with impact.
