This landmark initiative, a brainchild of NICO under the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, seeks to address the critical need for structured academic and professional training in cultural knowledge. The primary objective of NACUS is to cultivate a strong sense of cultural pride and national identity among Nigerians through comprehensive educational programs.
According to the Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of NICO, Otunba Biodun Ajibola, the academy has achieved significant milestones in its establishment. The curriculum has received the crucial approval of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), and the corporate registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has been successfully finalized. This dual validation underscores the institution's readiness to deliver accredited and recognized academic programs.
Otunba Ajibola elaborated on the academic offerings of NACUS, stating that the institution will award National Diplomas in Cultural Administration Resource Management and Postgraduate Diplomas in Cultural Administration. These qualifications will not only equip graduates with specialized knowledge and skills but also enhance their employability, making them eligible for civil service promotions and diverse professional opportunities both within Nigeria and internationally.
The NICO boss passionately emphasized the intrinsic link between cultural understanding and national progress. Drawing parallels with the socio-economic advancements of nations like Japan, China, and Korea, which he attributed significantly to their strong cultural awareness, Otunba Ajibola suggested that Africa's developmental challenges are partly rooted in the lingering effects of cultural imperialism. He asserted that NACUS's curriculum will adopt a comparative approach, showcasing the richness and relevance of Nigeria's heritage in a global context, thereby aiming to dismantle long-standing notions of cultural inferiority. "This is a strategic move to challenge and overcome decades of cultural erosion," he affirmed.
Highlighting the inclusivity of NACUS's programs, Otunba Ajibola noted that they are designed to cater to a wide range of individuals, including current cultural officers, theatre practitioners, hospitality professionals, filmmakers, and even international students with an interest in Nigerian culture. A particularly noteworthy aspect of the academy is the prospect for graduates to serve as cultural officers in Nigerian embassies worldwide, positioning them as key ambassadors of the nation's rich cultural tapestry.
Furthermore, NACUS is set to introduce innovative and forward-thinking courses. Cultural Technology will focus on exploring and harnessing Nigeria's natural resources through indigenous technological knowledge for practical applications. Cultural Pharmacology represents another pioneering field, dedicated to the scientific investigation and development of Nigeria's extensive botanical resources into standardized medicinal formulations such as capsules and tablets.
The establishment of NACUS has garnered widespread support across the country. In the South-South region, the Cross River State Government has demonstrated its commitment to cultural preservation by donating a fully equipped facility to serve as the academy's regional campus. Similarly, in the South-West, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, the Soun of Ogbomosho, has generously provided a building to host the Ogbomosho campus.
The monarch expressed his profound appreciation for the Federal Government's initiative and reiterated his unwavering support for cultural education as a vital instrument for fostering national unity and overall development. "We are proud to have this institution in Ogbomosho. It will become a centre for cultural learning, unity, and national identity," the Oba stated.
In conclusion, the launch of the Nigerian Academy for Cultural Studies marks a significant and decisive step by Nigeria towards a conscious cultural revival and the pursuit of sustainable development through the power of education. With its strategically located campuses, accredited curriculum, and innovative programs, NACUS is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping a culturally aware and prosperous future for the nation.
