RB Leipzig finally ended their away-day woes with a thrilling 3-2 win over Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga on Friday, thanks in large part to a brilliant brace from Dutch midfielder Xavi Simons. The victory marked Leipzig’s first away win of 2024 and snapped a seven-match winless streak on the road, dating back to December 7.

All three of Leipzig’s goals came from outside the box in a dominant attacking display that was nearly undone by a late Wolfsburg fightback. The win lifts Leipzig into fourth place, level on points with third-placed Eintracht Frankfurt, and boosts their Champions League qualification hopes.

Leipzig started strong, punishing Wolfsburg for early mistakes. Loïs Openda opened the scoring in the 11th minute after Wolfsburg carelessly lost the ball near their own penalty area. The Belgian striker drilled a low shot inside the far post to give the visitors a deserved lead.

Just 15 minutes later, Xavi Simons doubled the advantage. A slip in the Wolfsburg defense allowed Leipzig to regain possession, and Simons made the most of the opportunity, cutting inside before placing another low effort into the same corner of the net.

Simons struck again after the break with the highlight of the night — a beautiful, curling strike from 25 meters that sailed past the goalkeeper, giving Leipzig a 3-0 lead and leaving fans and pundits alike singing the 20-year-old's praises.

Wolfsburg, however, refused to go quietly. Kilian Fischer pulled one back, becoming the club’s 16th different scorer this season — a new team record. Andreas Skov Olsen then narrowed the gap further with 16 minutes remaining, setting up a tense finish.

Despite mounting pressure, Leipzig held on to secure the win, while Wolfsburg’s slump continues. The home side remains 12th in the standings and has now lost four consecutive matches.

For Leipzig, the victory not only restores confidence on the road but also showcases the growing influence of Simons, whose form could be vital in the season’s final stretch.
