Nigerian sprint sensation Favour Ofili etched her name into the annals of athletics history on Saturday, delivering a breathtaking performance at the 2025 Adidas Atlanta City Games. The 22-year-old blazed across the track at Piedmont Park in Atlanta, clocking an astounding 15.85 seconds (with a wind reading of +2.0m/s) in the women's 150 meters, breaking the world record.

In a truly historic moment, Ofili became the first woman ever to conquer the 150m distance in under 16 seconds. Her sensational run obliterated the previous world best of 16.23 seconds, set back in 2018 by Bahamian Olympic champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo.

Ofili's record-shattering feat was the undeniable highlight of an impressive showing by Nigerian athletes at the high-profile street meet. The unique event, known for its fan-friendly, open-air setting, attracted top global talent, and the Nigerian contingent certainly made their presence felt.

Reigning world record holder in the 100m hurdles, Tobi Amusan, also demonstrated her competitive edge. Clocking a solid 12.53 seconds, she secured second place in her heat, trailing only American Keni Harrison who ran 12.44 seconds. This performance comfortably qualified Amusan for the final later in the day. Amusan's Atlanta showing builds upon her previous performances in Xiamen (12.74s) and Keqiao (12.66s), indicating a steady build-up of momentum as the summer championship season approaches.

Adding to the Nigerian success, sprinter Udodi Onwuzurike delivered a season's best performance in the men's 100 meters. He clocked an impressive 10.20 seconds to finish second in his heat, behind South Africa's formidable Akani Simbine, who won in 10.13 seconds. Onwuzurike's time was sufficient to secure his place in the final, marking a significant step forward in his 2025 campaign and a promising return to peak form.

The Adidas Atlanta City Games stands out as an innovative "street-style" athletics event. By moving away from the traditional stadium setting and hosting competitions in urban environments like Piedmont Park, the event fosters a closer connection between athletes and fans, creating an electrifying and accessible atmosphere for all involved. Favour Ofili's historic performance in this dynamic setting only amplified the excitement and underscored the growing prominence of Nigerian athletes on the global stage.
