Inter Milan has officially announced the appointment of Romanian Cristian Chivu as the club's new head coach. Chivu, a former defender for the Nerazzurri, has signed a two-year deal, stepping into the role previously held by Simone Inzaghi. Inzaghi's departure followed Inter's 5-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the recent Champions League final.

Chivu's return to Inter marks a new chapter for the former player, who spent seven years at the club as a defender and was an integral part of José Mourinho's historic treble-winning squad in 2010.

A Return to San Siro

While Chivu's recent senior coaching experience was brief, having managed Parma for less than four months, his tenure there saw the team secure safety in Serie A. Inter's official statement highlighted his impact at Parma, noting, “In February 2025, Cristian was given his first opportunity to coach a senior side as Parma … He led the Emilians to safety, with the team picking up 16 points from 13 matches under his guidance.”

The club expressed confidence in Chivu's ability to lead, stating, “Now, Cristian Chivu is beginning the third chapter of his Nerazzurri story. And he’s doing so with the values that have always guided him: dedication, sacrifice and a tireless work ethic.”

This appointment signals Inter's decision to entrust a familiar face with the reins, hoping to leverage Chivu's deep understanding of the club's culture and his past successes as a player.

Upcoming Challenges

Chivu will face an immediate challenge as Inter prepares to kick off their Club World Cup campaign. Their first match is scheduled for June 17 against Mexico’s Monterrey in Los Angeles. This tournament will provide an early test for the new coach and his tactical approach.

Meanwhile, former coach Simone Inzaghi, who departed Inter last week after a four-year stint, has since joined Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal.
