Netflix Increases Subscription Prices in Nigeria Amidst Economic Pressures

Nigerian subscribers to the popular streaming service Netflix are once again facing higher costs as the company has implemented its third price increase in less than a year. This latest adjustment, marking the first for 2025, sees a notable jump across all subscription tiers, placing additional strain on consumers already grappling with a challenging economic climate.

Details updated on Netflix's website reveal the new pricing structure. The Premium plan has climbed from ₦7,000 to ₦8,500 per month. Subscribers to the Standard plan will now pay ₦6,500, up from ₦5,500. The Basic plan has risen from ₦3,500 to ₦4,000, while the most affordable Mobile plan is now ₦2,500, an increase from ₦2,200. These recent changes follow two previous price hikes by the streaming giant in April and July of 2024, indicating a consistent upward trend in costs for Nigerian users.

This series of price adjustments by Netflix comes at a particularly difficult time for Nigerian households. The nation is currently experiencing significant economic headwinds, including rising living expenses, a depreciating naira, and record-high inflation. These factors are squeezing disposable incomes and making even essential services more expensive.

Netflix isn't alone in adjusting its prices in Nigeria. The move follows similar actions by other major service providers in the country. Recently, Nigerian telecom providers implemented tariff hikes of up to 50 percent. Furthermore, MultiChoice, the parent company of satellite television providers DStv and GOtv, also announced new prices that took effect on March 1, 2025.

For DStv subscribers, the Compact bouquet saw a 25 percent increase, rising from ₦15,700 to ₦19,000. The Compact Plus package moved from ₦25,000 to ₦30,000, and the premium DStv package now costs ₦44,500, up from ₦37,000.

GOtv subscribers are also facing steeper bills. The Jinja package increased from ₦3,600 to ₦3,900, and Jolli from ₦4,850 to ₦5,800. The GOtv Max plan rose to ₦8,500 from ₦7,200, Supa climbed to ₦11,400 from ₦9,600, and Supa Plus saw an increase to ₦16,800 from ₦15,700.

As of yet, Netflix has not released an official statement or explanation regarding these latest price hikes in Nigeria. This leaves subscribers to speculate on the reasons behind the repeated increases and how these rising costs will impact their entertainment choices in an increasingly challenging economic environment.
