The Chief Corporate Communications Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd), Mr. Olufemi Soneye, has officially stepped down from his position, drawing the curtain on what many observers have called a dynamic and impactful communications leadership period.
A Thoughtful Exit
In a farewell message addressed to colleagues and media partners on Friday, Soneye expressed heartfelt appreciation for the collaboration, professionalism, and support he received while leading the communications team at NNPC Ltd.
“I extend my heartfelt gratitude to you all for the unwavering support, professionalism, and genuine commitment you’ve shown in helping to shape and amplify the NNPC Ltd story over the past 20 months,” he stated.
Soneye noted that his decision to resign was a personal one, citing a need to spend more time with his family and focus on pressing personal matters.
“It has been a profound honour to serve both the Company and our country, and to contribute in my own way to the ongoing transformation of NNPC Ltd,” he added.
Legacy of Transformation and Engagement
Appointed at a pivotal time for the energy company, Soneye’s tenure coincided with the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) and the transformation of NNPC into a fully commercial entity. During this period, the company undertook several reforms aimed at improving transparency, operational efficiency, and stakeholder engagement.
Under Soneye’s communications leadership, NNPC Ltd notably enhanced its public image, deepened its media relations strategy, and worked to foster greater public understanding of its evolving corporate role within Nigeria’s energy sector.
Continued Support from Afar
Though stepping away from his official duties, Soneye affirmed his continued goodwill toward the company. He pledged to remain a vocal supporter of NNPC Ltd and encouraged his colleagues in the media and corporate communications sector to maintain balanced and constructive reportage.
“I enjoin you, dear colleagues, to continue your robust, balanced, and constructive reportage in support of the Company’s noble mission and strategic role in Nigeria’s energy future,” he wrote.
Industry Commendations
Soneye’s exit has prompted commendations from industry stakeholders, who have applauded his contributions to the repositioning of NNPC’s corporate image. His efforts in fostering open communication and promoting the company's strategic reforms have been described as both timely and effective.
As NNPC Ltd continues its journey as a commercially driven national energy company, Soneye’s departure marks the end of a communications era that helped usher in a more transparent and media-friendly corporate culture.
His successor is yet to be officially named by NNPC Ltd.
