Nigerian comedian, actor, and filmmaker Ayodeji Richard Makun, better known as A.Y, is pushing back against the idea that age limits an entertainer’s relevance. In a recent Instagram post, the multitalented performer reflected with characteristic humour on his enduring success in the industry.
“I guess I forgot the memo,” he quipped about claims that the spotlight dims with age, attributing his staying power to divine grace. He punctuated his message with the phrase “StillRelevant AYNoDeyRetire,” underscoring both his confidence and gratitude for his continued popularity.
With a career spanning more than a decade, A.Y has built an impressive résumé. He is the host of the popular A.Y Live comedy shows and creator of widely viewed comedy skits that have cemented his reputation as one of Nigeria’s top comedic talents. He is also the CEO of Corporate World Entertainment, Nigeria, through which he has produced major stage shows and film projects.
A.Y made his cinematic debut as a producer with 30 Days in Atlanta, which was directed by Robert O. Peters and achieved both critical and commercial success. Beyond stand-up and film, he directs and stars in the sitcom AY’s Crib, acting alongside Alex Ekubo, Venita Akpofure, Buchi Franklin, and Justice Nuagbe.
His work has earned him recognition on the international stage as well. In 2009, he was appointed a U.N. Peace Ambassador. He also co-hosted the 2018 Golden Movie Awards Africa alongside Ghanaian actress Joselyn Dumas at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra, Ghana.
As he continues to produce, perform, and entertain diverse audiences, A.Y’s recent message serves as both a light-hearted joke and a testament to his belief that true relevance transcends age—so long as talent, hard work, and grace remain in the mix.
