In a candid interview on Behind The Fame by African List, the legendary actress recounted how her late husband, who initially supported her acting ambitions during their courtship, became hostile and physically violent once they were married.
“Our love story is a little powerful,” she recalled. “When we were still dating, he was very happy and even allowed me to act. He would come to watch me at rehearsals. But after we got married, he changed. Sometimes when I go to act and come home, he would beat me, saying, ‘Didn’t I warn you not to act?’”
Iya Awero, one of Nigeria’s most respected actresses with a career spanning over five decades, said the emotional and physical abuse marked a sharp and heartbreaking contrast to the love and support she had once received.
The marriage ended prematurely with her husband’s untimely death. However, the trauma left behind has remained, influencing her personal decisions and outlook on relationships. She revealed that the experience made her skeptical about the idea of remarrying, especially given the uncertainty that comes with starting anew.
“Though we didn’t get to enjoy the marriage for long because he died young,” she said. “If you say you want to remarry, do you know what you’ll meet where you’re going?”
Her deeply personal story highlights not only the silent struggles many women face behind the scenes but also the strength it takes to continue a professional journey amid personal turmoil. Despite the setbacks, Iya Awero has become an enduring symbol of resilience and excellence in Nigerian film and theatre.
Her revelation adds to the ongoing discourse on domestic abuse and the need for more support systems for women in vulnerable situations, particularly those in the creative industry. Through her voice, Iya Awero continues to inspire generations—on and off screen.
