The Nigerian Breweries-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund has officially announced the opening of entries for the 11th edition of the Maltina Teacher of the Year Competition, reaffirming its commitment to celebrating and empowering exceptional teachers across Nigeria.

At the launch event held in Lagos, the company revealed that more than ₦51.6 million in cash prizes, sponsorship opportunities, and school projects will be awarded to outstanding teachers in this year’s edition. The competition is open to secondary school teachers in both public and private schools nationwide.

Speaking at the event, Uzodinma Odenigbo, Corporate Affairs Director at Nigerian Breweries Plc, explained that the overall winner will receive a cash prize of ₦10 million, an overseas capacity development training opportunity, and a school infrastructure project valued at ₦30 million for their school.

“The first runner-up will take home a cash prize of ₦5 million along with a trophy, while the second runner-up will receive ₦3 million,” he added. In addition, all state champions will be recognised with plaques and a ₦1 million cash prize each.

Odenigbo described the competition as a powerful platform for advancing quality education, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4. “This initiative has created powerful ripple effects across schools and communities through the inspiring journeys of past winners,” he noted.

Entries for the 2025 competition are open from June 24 to August 22. Eligible teachers are encouraged to visit the dedicated Maltina Teacher of the Year website to complete their online applications.

Odenigbo, who also represented the Managing Director of Nigerian Breweries Plc, Hans Essaadi, at the event, underlined the company’s enduring commitment to honouring teachers for their invaluable contributions to society. He praised the partnership with key education bodies including the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), and the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), whose collaboration has sustained the competition over the past decade.

“Today, we begin another chapter in this story, a celebration of the men and women who give so much of themselves to nurture the minds and shape the future of the next generation,” Essaadi said. He noted that the growing number of entries, increased involvement of partner organisations, and stronger government engagement all reflect a shared success in elevating the profile of teachers in Nigeria.

Also speaking at the launch, Sarah Agha, Marketing Director at Nigerian Breweries Plc, reaffirmed Maltina’s mission to support and motivate teachers.

“At Maltina, our mission is to nourish lives and share happiness. No one deserves happiness more than our teachers – the quiet heroes who shape our children’s futures,” she said. She added that beyond rewarding individual winners, the competition has helped elevate the status of teachers, promote community development, and make meaningful contributions to education in Nigeria.

Representatives of the NUT, TRCN, and ANCOPSS also attended the launch and commended the Nigerian Breweries-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund for its continued efforts to advance educational development in the country.

Established in 2015, the Maltina Teacher of the Year Competition is funded by the Nigerian Breweries-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund, itself founded in 1994 to help develop Nigeria’s education sector in alignment with global goals for quality education.
