Akins, who is based in the United States, received a formal welcome from the Academy acknowledging his contributions to the global music industry. The invitation recognises his role in shaping musical conversations and promoting diverse voices, and encourages him to help fulfil the Academy’s mission of celebrating creative excellence.
Speaking about the honour, Akins described the induction as both a personal milestone and a professional responsibility.
“Being invited to join the Academy is incredibly meaningful to me,” he said. “It’s recognition of my work, my voice, my commitment to the music industry and culture at large. It’s not just an honour, it’s a responsibility to contribute, represent diverse perspectives, and help shape the future of music on a global stage.”
Akins’ journey began with grassroots storytelling and music criticism, a path he says helped him bridge cultures and elevate African and Black voices in global music discourse.
“This recognition feels like validation that my efforts to bridge cultures and elevate African and Black voices are making an impact,” he added.
Beyond his critical writing, Akins is the founder of Connecting The Dot Africa, a platform dedicated to amplifying African artistry and fostering cultural exchange. He says the Recording Academy membership will motivate him to continue pushing boundaries and advocating for richer representation of African stories in the global music scene.
“Above all, it’s a reminder that dreams, no matter where they start, are possible. I’m grateful to be part of a community that values creativity, integrity, and the power of music,” he said.
As a member of the Academy, Akins will have the opportunity to participate in the Grammy Awards process—helping to spotlight excellence across genres, celebrate the achievements of peers, and champion diverse musical communities worldwide.
