A private clinic in Peru has been fined $190,000 after the confidential medical records of Colombian superstar Shakira were leaked on social media earlier this year, local health authorities announced Wednesday.

Hospitalization During Lima Tour Stop

The incident dates back to February, when the 48-year-old, four-time Grammy-winning singer-songwriter was rushed to Lima’s Delgado Auna clinic with an unspecified abdominal condition.

The health scare forced Shakira to cancel a highly anticipated show in the Peruvian capital. However, she recovered quickly enough to return to the stage just two days later, resuming her first world tour in seven years, titled Las mujeres ya no lloran (Women Don’t Cry Anymore).

Outrage Over Privacy Breach

Shortly after her brief hospitalization, details of her medical report surfaced on social media, sparking outrage among fans and triggering an official investigation into the breach.

At the time, the Delgado Auna clinic acknowledged the leak and launched an internal probe, describing the disclosure as a “serious ethical breach of our code of conduct and regulations governing personal data processing.”

Penalty for Violating Patient Privacy

Peru’s National Authority for the Protection of Personal Data announced the fine on Wednesday, citing the clinic’s failure to safeguard Shakira’s sensitive medical information. The $190,000 penalty is intended to underscore the importance of patient privacy and the legal responsibility of healthcare providers to protect personal data.

The case has highlighted broader concerns about the security of patient records in an age of instant digital sharing and the reputational damage that can result from privacy violations.

Shakira’s Tour Continues

Despite the incident, Shakira’s Las mujeres ya no lloran world tour has continued to draw large crowds across Latin America and beyond. The tour marks a major return to the global stage for the Colombian star, known for hits like “Hips Don’t Lie,” “Whenever, Wherever,” and her signature fusion of pop, rock, and Latin sounds.

While neither Shakira nor her representatives have issued recent public comments about the fine, the controversy has served as a stark reminder of the importance of medical confidentiality—even for the world’s biggest celebrities.
